weird behaviour when closing apps?

a few days ago, i was using android file transfer to put some new music on my phone. during transferring a song, the app hung up. i needed to resort to force quit the app on my mac. (which never happened before or since with that app) that's when i noticed something strange. there were three apps that were already closed listed in the force quit panel. i force quit them. no problem, right? however, since first noticing this, i've been paying attention to it. it seems that when close any of those three apps with the "red dot", and even though the indicator dot below the dock turns off (telling me it's closed), they are still seen in the force quit panel.

if i close those apps by the "click and hold" till i get the option popup and choose "Quit" the dock indicator goes away, and they are no longer in the force quit panel. has anyone else noticed this? and is this new, or have i just not noticed it before? and do i just need to get used to closing them by using the "quit" popup?

In some applications, the red dot does NOT quit. It just closes the window.

That is the case, for example, for Finder, Quicktime Player, Preview, Safari...

You should be easily able to see that by looking at your menu bar.

If you are using Quicktime Player, you see "Quicktime Player" up there on the top left, next to the Apple menu.

Press the red dot to close a movie. You will still see "Quicktime Player" because the application is still running.

Use Command-Q to quit.

Preview is particular vile because it can visually appear to have quit from the menu bar and dock, yet it is clinging to an open document in a background process that you could only discover from the Force Quit dialog, or via a Terminal search for the process in the system process table, returning the PID if it exists:

pgrep -ix preview

When I use Preview, I visit the File menu and ensure that any open items are closed before formally quitting the application. The option key allows you to close all items.

None of these three applications Quicktime Player, Preview, TextEdit will quit by clicking the red dot.

I am very surprised by your saying that the dot under the icon goes away when you do that. Do other applications have the dot under them?

When you close that last window, say in Preview:

do you no longer see that Preview is running - does the active application change to something else, or does it still show "Preview" next to the Apple symbol?

exactly, i'm confused too. those apps used to stay active after closing the window with the red dot. now they do appear to quit completely. the finder shows the previous app/panel that was previously open. as an example, i'll use text edit. i just closed it with the red dot.

see what i mean?

Hi there jeffreythefrog,

We understand you're experiencing an issue where apps you've already closed still show in the Force Quit menu, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

First, if you haven't already, restart your Mac and check for the issue again: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

If the issue persists, start in safe mode, and test there: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Also, to determine if the issue is user-specific or system-wide, create a new admin user account and test there: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Cheers!

even after the document that was using preview is closed, then i close preview with the red dot, it still appears in force quit but the open indicator on the dock goes away. but if i quit preview by clicking and holding the icon until i get the "quit popup" then it no longer appears in the force quit panel.

hi luis,

thanks for the cmd+q suggestion. it does work fine. it quits those apps and after that they are no longer in the force quit panel. :) but that just raises another question in my mind. those apps used to stay active when closing their window by the red dot. now, when i click the red dot, the dock indicator goes away, but they are in the force quit panel. to me, it appears as though they are somewhere in between opened and closed. i'm thinking that one or two of the thousands and thousands of files that make up the macOS have gone AWOL. but i will say again that since it's not causing issues (except in my brain) i guess i just need to get used to it.

thanks barber lives 123,

thanks for the reply. at least you understand my issue properly, but:

restart, log out, log back in was the first thing i tried. still happens.

boot into safe mode was the second thing i tried. still happens.

it does appear system wide. i tried a test acct. still happens.

and, while i'm here, i already tried reset NVRAM or PRAM. reset SMC. still happens.

also, i have NO antivirus or any other such crap on my mac.

yes luis, i do understand that the red dot does not completely quit all apps. my issue is with these three apps specifically. when i close them with the red dot, the indicator dot under the icon on the dock goes away (telling me they are closed), and the menubar shows the app/window that was open before the affected apps were opened. it's not causing issues with the performance of my mac, it's just a little confusing. :)

Command-Q has been the standard way to quit applications since 1984 when the first mac came out, and long before there was a Dock (which came with Mac OS X in 2000). I am thinking this goes back even to the Apple Lisa, around 1983.

That aside, there is definitely something not working correctly. As you say, it looks like the applications are somewhere between dead and alive by the behavior you describe.
