AirPods Max - constant soft static

Got my AirPods Max a couple days ago and I'm noticing a soft static in the background whenever I wear them. The static is louder with ANC on and especially pronounced in Transparency Mode. Listening wired (with Apple's $35 cable) and fiddling with the earcups doesn't seem to do anything about it.

Does anyone have any info on how to fix this, or any experience that would suggest it's something that can be fixed by a firmware update?

Hey there Clamly,

We'd like to help get your AirPods Max working with clear audio, no matter which mode you're using(or not using).

While you may need to contact Apple Support for further troubleshooting, we'd like to first rule out some possible causes:

  1. The first step to take would be to make sure the iPhone you're pairing with is up to date. If you have a compatible model, the latest version is 14.4. You can verify the version number installed within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. This link shows How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods.
  3. The next step to take would be to test pairing your AirPods with another device to see if the same issue occurs.

Have a good one!

Hi ryane77, thanks for replying. My iPhone is running the latest iOS and my Mac is running the latest macOS. My Max is brand new so it shouldn't need any sort of cleaning, and looking at them again (including under the ear cushions) I can't see anything physically wrong with them. I wasn't able to pair them with my dad's iPhone (probably because the Max are only designed for 1 Apple ID at a time) but the fact that the static happens on both of my devices should indicate that the devices the headphones are being paired with aren't the problem. My devices are a few years old and only have Bluetooth 4, but I can't imagine that would cause any static in the headphones.
