Wacom pen tablet and Big Sur

no matter what I do and having followed all instructions to the letter my Wacom pen tablet will not work with Big Sur. the tablet is shown in system preferences and the light comes on to indicate it is connected and if I press any of the buttons at the top of the pad it shows up on the computer but no matter what I do the pen does not work.

This upgrade has cost me hours of work and is causing huge frustration. Any Ideas?
