Does anyone else find that trying to use the gesture to enlarge the keyboard doesn’t work?

Does anyone else find that trying to use the gesture to enlarge the keyboard doesn’t work? Small keyboard pops up, no amount of two finger spreading is making it do anything.

I am finding this latest addition to the UX to be extremely cumbersome as every time I want to switch between drawing and typing I have to fight with my iPad to function the way I like it. Is there anyway to set the preferences so I don’t have to adjust things constantly?
