Top Sites/'Most visited' in Safari 14 suddenly vanished

Hi,

since yesterday the Top Sites/Most visited section of my new Safari windows/tabs does not show up anymore. Other options like Favorites or Reading List show up fine.

I restarted the app (Safari 14), the Mac (10.15.7) several times now, no change.
I did no update recently or changed any settings, in Safari or otherwise.
When I turn the corresponding option from the little settings panel off and on again, it displays a generic message saying as much as „🕘 Frequently visited websites will be displayed here, as soon as they are available. This section might be hidden if there is no content to be displayed“ (my system's running in german, so I am translating)

If this is a common bug, I wasn’t able to find an existing solution elsewhere and hope to find one here.

It is solved!

I replaced the whole folder ~/Users/myaccount/Library/Safari with that from a Time machine backup from a few days ago. The Top Sites are back and only the browsing history of a few days is in between is gone. Whew!

The fastest way to address this would be to delete the preferences and refresh them. The easiest way to do this would be by using free third party software like EchoMist's Preference Cleaner 2.

Gove that a go and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your suggestion. I just tried the software you mentioned – multiple times with restarts – but it did not help.

Funny enough, I just noticed my whole browser history before yesterday is also gone. It didn’t even remember the auto completion of URLs. I guess this is connected to my main issue and that the history is gone for good. Any idea what might have caused this and if it might occur again, or how to prevent it from happening again?
