macbook pro ssd S.M.A.R.T. status "not supported"

Pretty much what the title says. I believe my SSD may not be functioning correctly.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

I don't see anything to worry about in the EtreCheck report.

Since you have the non-Touchbar MBPro 2016 see if your laptop qualifies for this free SSD repair program:

https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-solid-state-drive-service

FYI, here is the current list of the publicly acknowledged free repair programs for various Apple products (some products such as your laptop have multiple programs available):

https://support.apple.com/service-programs

I currently have a few of these non-Touchbar 2016-2017 MBPros I'm working on so I'll try to remember to check their SMART status as I repair them. I honestly don't know whether this is a cause for concern since like I said Apple doesn't fully implement the SMART feature into their SSDs and I don't really pay attention to the SMART status listed within macOS since we rely on apps like DriveDx to check the health of the drives on our organization's Macs.

Make sure to have frequent & regular backups.

What is the exact model of your Mac? You can get this information by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

Not all Apple SSDs support SMART. Even when an Apple SSD supports SMART it may not support more than basic health reporting. I never look at what macOS or Disk Utility reports since there are better more reliable ways of checking the health of a drive. I've replaced hundreds of failing drives and only ever had macOS report a SMART status of "failed" once or twice.

See if DriveDx can provide a health report for the Apple SSD and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

Exactly what problems are you having? To look for possible software issues run EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

Run Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility click on "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid shows everything is "Ok" click on "Show Details" to look through the report for any unfixed errors. If you find any unfixed errors, then you will need to erase the whole physical drive before restoring from a backup or clone.

You can also run the Apple Diagnostics.

I don't know why Disk Utility is reporting "SMART Status: Not Supported", but macOS really doesn't do much with the SMART health information anyway. Obviously SMART is supported since DriveDx is able to access the SSD's health information. What may not be supported is the ability for the SSD to run a self-diagnostic. I've never really paid any attention to the SMART status listed within macOS as I always check the SMART information manually or use an app like DriveDx.

If you just happened to notice "SMART Status: Not Supported" and that is your only concern, then I would not worry about it at this time since macOS doesn't always know what it is doing and some Apple SSDs only partially implement SMART anyway and macOS tends to disable SMART reporting for some reason. You can try using the following command within the Terminal app to see if manually enabling SMART on the SSD temporarily solves this problem. The best way to type the command is beginning by typing "sudo " with at least one space after the letter "O", then using the Finder to drag & drop the DriveDx app onto the open Terminal window so it auto-fills the correct path to the DriveDx app. Then delete the trailing space and continue typing the following making sure to press the "Return" key at the end of the line to execute the command:

/Contents/Resources/smartctl -s on /dev/disk0

So the whole command will look something like this:

sudo /Users/hwtech/Downloads/DriveDx.app/Contents/Resources/smartctl -s on /dev/disk0

You will be prompted for your admin password. You won't see anything on the screen as you type the password. Press the "Return" key to submit the password.

As for the "Container" you are using an older version of macOS where Containers are not used.

The EtreCheck app was created by a well respected forum contributor so the report could be posted on these forums so that other contributors would have an easier time understanding another user's system in order to offer advice. The report itself is mostly meaningless unless it is properly examined and interpreted by someone who knows what to look for within the report (or if you pay the developer to provide an analysis/interpretation). Plus we would need to know the details of the issue you are trying to resolve.

Always have frequent and regular backups. FYI, it is impossible to recover accidentally deleted data from an SSD after emptying the Trash plus an SSD can fail at any time without any warning signs.
