I just updated to macOS Big Sur and can't access Microsoft word, excel or powerpoint

I just updated to macOS Big Sur but can't access Miscroft word, excel or powerpoint. It was a one time purchase when I bought my laptop. How do it get Miscroft to work so that I can use it and access my existing documents?

Microsoft does not provide free upgrades between major versions of their Office products (unless you subscribe to Microsoft 365) and older versions of Office are not compatible with macOS Catalina or Big Sur.

If you have a version of Microsoft Office that is not compatible, you can either subscribe to Microsoft 365 or you can make a one-time purchase. See: https://products.office.com/en-us/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products-for-mac?ms.officeurl=mac-compare-redir

Or use the free Microsoft Office on the web: https://products.office.com/en-us/free-office-online-for-the-web

or Google Docs: https://www.google.com/docs/about/

or the free and very good Libre Office https://www.libreoffice.org/

or Apple’s Pages and Numbers

Just to clarify (even though I suspect you know) re "after I buy the one time subscription" the one-time purchase is not a subscription. Both the one-time purchase option and the Microsoft 365 subscription options are available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/buy/compare-microsoft-365-products-for-mac?ms.officeurl=mac-compare-redir

Either way (purchase or subscription), you will be able to open your current documents that were created in older versions.
