Issue with TM working on recent upgrade to 10.14.6 from High Sierra

I have tried numerous time to complete an TM on external WD My Passport 2TB drive, and it will not complete. Watching all day today for over 6 hours, it has been "stuck" in cleaning up state for now over 2 hours. I know the drive is good as it is recognized and had previous TM files back to 2014 prior to upgrading. I have read numerous articles about disk repair, deleting .inprogress files; and formatting concerns on the drive. I have turned off the security software and attempted, but this did not work either. I have plugged in USB directly which is current attempt.

I don't have a bootable file, so do not want to erase the WD drive from the former; but what is the solution. I can't believe Apple still has this problem several years later. I cannot upgrade to Catalina - which from reading has problems also.

Hello Obx606,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're experiencing an issue with your Time Machine backup. Looking over article, If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine, it does appear that you've carried out most of the suggested actions, short of the erase and reformatting.

You can take a look at Time Machine troubleshooting on Mac to see if the linked articles will provide you with additional actions to try. Please know that ultimately you may need to use a different external drive, or try erasing the current drive to see if that corrects this issue.

Best wishes.
