You need to name the clip before importing it into iMovie.
You can name the clip in iMovie by selecting it and doing a File/Reveal in Finder, and naming it in the Original Media folder that pops up. However, that will break the link to the clip in any project that already is using it.

Yes. The original clip may be in use by several projects. If you rename the clip, the projects will not be able to find it and link to it. So, the link would broken for all projects that are using the clip.
EDIT: If you are not yet using the clip in any projects, then you can rename it without any issues.

Trying to rename clips. Not sure what you mean by.."another project, link would be broken". You mean another project other than the one I am working on?
