mid 2007 imac. I have erased the hd and installed tiger from the start up disks. How do I get to El Capitan? And will it be worth it?

You have to go through the upgrade path. You have to first install Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which is the first release that has the Mac App Store. As SL is no longer available from the Apple online store you have to look for the which DVD, I still see them on e-bay or maybe Amazon.
Good luck, you're dealing in ancient history (technology wise) so it may take you awhile.
The base mid-2007 iMac shipped with 1GB RAM and a 250 GB 7200 rpm drive. El Capitan expects a minimum of 2GB of RAM, and for that vintage iMac, 6GB RAM is the maximum via OWC. At 14 years old, that internal hard drive is past its life expectancy, so that may be your weakest link going forward.
When you install 10.6.x, you have to upgrade it to 10.6.8. Look for https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399?locale=en_US to get to 10.6.8 which will have the Mac App Store.

So if i get a copy of SL and install it, I can then go straight from there to El Capitan?
It has 4gb of ram and a fairly new HD
If I was to buy a copy from eBay. Would I need a serial number/key?I mean if it’s already been used on an other Mac will it work on mine?
