losing contacts - how do i stop it from happening

You're welcome! Were the contacts originally added to the Contacts app on your iPhone, or were they imported from another account such as work or school email address? If they were imported to the iPhone, have any recent changes been made to those email accounts? For example, have you recently changed jobs and removed your old work email account from your iPhone? These types of changes can cause contacts and calendars to be removed from the phone.

Great questions! These details help us quite a bit. If the contacts were associated with your old work email account, and that email account is no longer signed in on your iPhone, the best next step would be to export those contacts from the current location and then import them back to iCloud.

To see where the contacts are currently stored, open the Contacts app on your iPhone, then tap on Groups in the upper left corner. From there, you'll be able to hide all of the contacts temporarily, and then enable each group individually. Any contacts still associated with your work account can be shared/sent to yourself either through Messages or Mail, and then saved back to iCloud.

I am having a similar issue. During a text conversation I received a reply from the other party and the contact info was gone the text came in with just a phone number. I checked my contacts and the person was missing. It happened a second time today, I started a text to someone using their name to create the text. The next think I saw was their number at the top of the conversation. I checked my contacts app and they were gone too.

I’ve had my phone for nearly two years, this is not a work/school account.

I do allow work to have apps on my phone such as outlook and other Microsoft apps.

I tried to toggle on and off the contacts from iCloud, but that did not work.
