How can I stop mail and news opening on start up, both are not checked in options on the dock and neither show up in login options in user and groups. I am using a MacBook Air with Big Sur operating system which has had nothing but issues since I bought it.
Have you unchecked this option when you try to shut down or restart your Mac? If it's checked it will start apps that were running in the background.

Thanks for reply, have ticked ticked options for open on log in then unticked again did the same with option on shut down, this appears to have done the trick.
