Long lost administrator password

We have a MacBook Air and do not know the administrator password. All the online searches to fix this don't work.They give instructions where the things you should find are either not found or grayed out. I just want this Mac wiped clean with the ability to start over.I updated the operating system yesterday (macOS Sierra) but the Mac still has the admin ID on it so that didn't work.
