Internet accounts

Bug Sur Internet accounts keeps asking for my Exchange password to be entered. There is no place in Internet accounts for the password to be entered. The Exchange account works fin in Mail.

I have deleted and re-entered the account to no effect.

This isn’t a problem, just annoying.

Hey there MJJ47,

We'd like to help however we can to get that prompt to not repeatedly show for entering your Exchange account password.

As you mentioned having macOS Big Sur installed, the latest version would be macOS Big Sur 11.2.2. You can verify the version number installed by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. Here's how to first Back up your Mac with Time Machine, and afterwards, here's How to update the software on your Mac.

If you already have macOS 11.2.2 installed, we recommend a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

We understand you have no issues receiving/sending emails from the Mail app with your Exchange account. Another thing to check would be if other accounts(like iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) are having the same issue with prompting you to repeatedly enter the password. If not, that points to the Exchange account itself.

You may need to contact your Exchange account provider for further troubleshooting. A few things to ask about if you need to contact them: (account details, security details, if something needs to be done prior to setting it up on a device, special settings during setup, etc.) Exchange accounts usually involve a place of work, and may need special handling/setting up with your Mac.

Take care!

I'm seeing the same issue on 11.2.3 with my regular IMAP account to my ISP (i.e. not Exchange). I've also tried completely deleting and re-creating the account and have also manually removed the IMAP password entry from keychain access. I have also removed keychain from iCloud (so passwords are all local). I still see the password notification about once per day. I can safely dismiss the notification without entering the password and Mail continues to operate fine.

Interestingly, I have another (Gmail) account set up which never has this issue.

I'm having the exact same issue with an Exchange account I've added to my MacBook Mail account, as well as a friend of mine who's recently added a different Exchange account to her MacBook. As MJJ47 stated, the accounts work fine in Mail but it's just irritating having the notification appear for no apparent reason.

I tried adding the Exchange account as IMAP, which seems to resolve the issue. However, the issue with configuring as IMAP is there is no support to sync the Exchange account with my Calendar. I saw a suggestion to deselect "Automatically manage connection settings" in the Mail Exchange Account Preferences - I've just tried this so will see if this solves the issue.
