Big Sur on older Macbook Pro

If I have a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) should I upgrade manually to Big Sur? Or will that cause issues because it is not on the compatible list? Some apps require a newer version of macOS, but I don't want to update the OS if it won't work.

If it's not on the compatible list, it won't be able to upgrade to macOS Big Sur. But, you can upgrade to macOS Catalina.
