I need a new phone, my son has me on his account, can I upgrade with little to no cost

I'm on my son's family plan, can I upgrade my phone or does he need to do that from his end? Nothing fancy, just that my battery is really 3/4 dead almost all of the time.

Iphone 5/5S Hello, please can someone answer me...i have a chance to buy new iphone 5/5s from my family, its realy brand new, unpacked, they never use it. But my question is, if it will work fine?? they told me that it cannot be upgraded or something like this, because its old type of iphone...i only want it for my child, cose i have iphone 11 myself, so i can easily connect with it. thank you so much for your answer.

It appears that the highest software update on this device is iOS 12.5. Her Amazon Prime account is now requiring iOS 13 or greater. Is it time to buy her a new iPad, or are there any options. I believe that you meant to inquire with your carrier / cellular service provider. Have your son contact the carrier with whom he has the family plan set up. Take things from there for the purchase of your new phone.
