Reset SMC and NVRAM on your (not M1) MacBook Pro and try again, and try a different USB keyboard.

If there’s a hub or cable used here, try connecting directly.

Keyboards do fail.

USB ports can over-draw power and shut off temporarily, or can fail, too.
