How do you browse by genre on Apple TV?

On my laptop, I'm not able to find the magic button for browsing. I've googled and googled and there appears to be nothing on the bottom or top of the screen. I'm surprised an Apple product would be this confounding!

If you mean the Apple TV+ service in a web browser, then what you see on the main page is everything that is available there. It is already categorized by genre (drama, comedy, feature films, non-fiction, family). Each row is (independently) scrollable horizontally, so some shows may not be visible until you scroll.

If you mean the TV app on your Mac notebook (which also includes a lot of non-Apple TV+ content), then genres are available in the movies tab.

I signed up for a free trial. How do I get to the actual selections then?

What you get on tv.apple.com is the same Apple TV+ content as in the Apple TV app. There is other content in the Apple TV app too, but that is not covered by the Apple TV+ subscription, and has to be payed for separately. I hope that much is clear.

The TV app on Macs is included with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later. It is not available for earlier versions macOS.

The top of the TV app window should have a number of buttons that work like tabs (i.e. they change all of the window below it, similar to browser tabs).

The exact tabs may vary by country or region.

The ‘Movies’ tab will have genre tiles when you scroll down.

The ‘TV Shows’ tab may have genre tiles when you scroll down.

I signed up for a free trial. How do I get to the actual selections then? Every time I click on info about downloading the app, I'm directed to that same page. In addition to having to having limited selections, also has no link to the app. It seems I'm being lead in circles. It does have a place where I can adjust setting for the app, which would lead one to think that it's somehow related to getting actual programming. I've never seen an app so perplexing (except for iTunes). Thanks for trying to help however!
