iPad lags when using digital touch

I have a 7th gen iPad, and when trying to write or draw in iMessage using digital touch, it begins to lag, whether using an Apple Pencil or finger. I’ve tried clearing the ram, about to consider doing a factory reset. I have the 126gb version with 99.79gb free.

Hi there Odinpup,

From what we can tell, you're experiencing slow performance on your iPad when writing or drawing in the Messages app. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities, and we can provide some guidance.

To start, have you only noticed this behavior in Messages? If the app stops responding, let's try the suggestions in this support article:

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

Next, what steps did you take to reset your iPad exactly? Have you tried a restart?

Restart your iPad

If the information above doesn't seem to help, please provide more details about what is happening exactly and we'll take a closer look from there.

Cheers.

Odinpup,

Thanks for the video and details. You mentioned that the slow performance you've experienced with Digital Touch persists even after a factory restore. Let's dig a little deeper to get to the bottom of this.

Have you tried adjusting your touch settings to see if that makes a difference? Have a look at this support article to learn how:

Adjust touch settings on iPad

Also, do you experience this behavior when using other Digital Touch features, like Tap or Fireball? This link provides more information:

Use Digital Touch on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Take care.

Odinpup,

We appreciate the information. It sounds like you're experiencing slow performance when using the Digital Touch feature in Messages on your iPhone, as well as your iPad. You also mentioned Safari not loading websites or content in websites as expected. We'll keep working together to sort this out.

For the behavior with Digital Touch, does restarting your iPhone or your iPad seem to help, even if only temporarily?

Restart your iPad

Restart your iPhone

Next, let's be sure your iPad and iPhone are both running the latest software versions, which are iPadOS 14.4 and iOS 14.4. If needed, learn how to update here:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Also, please let us know how much available and used storage space you see listed in Settings > General > iPhone/iPad Storage on both devices. Learn more about checking and managing device storage from this support article:

How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

For the issue you've noticed with Safari, try working through the steps in this link, and let us know how it goes:

If Safari displays a blank page or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Cheers.

I’m including a photo to better demonstrate what I mean. Yes, I’ve only experienced this issue in the Messages app while using the digital touch feature on iPad (no issues in any other app or the same feature on my iPhone). I use procreate and don’t have this issue. It is literally just within digital touch! As you can see, I was writing a sentence and the next word was supposed to be “to”, but it lag-glitched and created what looks like a swirly L. This is evident when compared to the previous two Ts in the word prior to this issue happening...and it’s random when it happens. I’ve had it happen when first composing a digital touch message, or further in like what is pictured. I’ve done it both with other apps open and with only the messages app open. I’ve cleared the RAM (hold power, then hold home on the shut down screen). I’ve even, prior to your reply, factory reset the iPad. Nothing has corrected for this issue.

Hi Karen,

It happens with Apple Pencil or with finger (usually with the Apple Pencil), however I now have a modification to make. I had it happen for the first time on iPhone today, using the exact same feature (digital touch on iPhone). It only does it when I’m writing or drawing a message in the aforementioned ?applet?. I was surprised when my iPhone had done it as this was the very first time it has. But to answer the second question directly, no I haven’t experienced any issues in relation to the other features of Digital Touch.

If I may, and on a different topic, Safari is also giving me issue with this very website. I encountered it yesterday, and again today. I login, go to reply, hit post, and am met with an error message. It keeps doing this until I swap to another browser, at which time, I have no issues like those in Safari (y’all really need an app or way for people like me who likes reporting bugs to get in quicker and easier contact with y’all without having to join the beta program).

Restarting either device makes no difference. As for updates, I jump on them when they come out. I want to say I first noticed the issue on iPad when a later version of 13 came out, and 14 saw no change. Prior to that, I didn’t have issues. As for your instructions on how to do these things, it’s appreciated but I am fairly tech savvy (I prefer MacOS, but like customizing...so I build my own PCs in other words). I just don’t have programming skills. As for storage space, I have plenty on both devices (100gbs free on iPad and iPhone is more than open...see photo). It’s not slow down so much as digital touch seems to lag on input when I’m writing or drawing....and with no way to erase, I have to start over. I just wanted to report the bug to you guys, but there is no actual way to do that unless you are a beta tester and I sincerely don’t have time for that.

As for the Safari issue, as previously stated, it’s only when I come here to reply. I login to the site, type my reply, hit post, and Safari tells me I’m logged out and to log back it. It saves my reply, but when I tap post again, the same thing happens. It loads other sites fine. I have to copy the link and open this page in Chrome to reply.
