Charge the iPad past 50%—maybe to 75%—and see if the install is permitted.

That'll enough power that the install can complete, even if the iPad is unplugged.

Starting an install on any platform with unstable or insufficient power can corrupt the install.

Do you see any error messages when you try updating it?

If any of the following true, your iPad may not be able to update:

  • You are running a beta of iPadOS 14.x. If so, then you will need to remove the beta profile first.
  • Your iPad does not have enough free space. Typically it should have at least 5GBs available to update.
  • Your iPad is not connected to power and it has less than 50% charge left.
  • The iPad is not connected via Wi-Fi to the Internet. It won't update on a cellular-only connection.
