Trying to add Japanese captions (already prepared by a translator) into FCPX by cutting and pasting exact text as translated from a text doc (MS Word and Google). Keep getting CEA-608 validation error messages in the form of the caption box turning red. I have selected Japanese as the language. Thought it might be a font issue, so tried first converting to Meiryo and Yu Gothic before cutting and pasting into the caption box. No joy. What am I doing wrong here?

Because of character limitations, 608 captions are limited to encoding in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, & Dutch.

FCP doesn't yet support CEA 708?
The specifications for 608 captions only allows specific language no matter what language FCP or the system is in.
You may have a very good reason to stick to CEA-608, though, and I hope you don't mind my saying, but isn't CEA-608 an older NTSC standard, ie. based on ASCII?
I have been doing quite a few SRT captions in Russian and in French. I met absolutely no problem with SRT. FCP can even burn in captions...
If you mean Japanese *only* burnt in the video without any possibiliy ro remove or change the captions, then add SRT captions to the FCP project Timeline, then share your video with burnt in captions, there is an option in the share menu. It worked for me with russian {;-)

The reason for CEA-608 would be to embed captions - to control the sensitive timing of the content - and allow for more options in display (specifically, paint-on). I believe that SRT cannot be embedded from FCPX directly, nor is there an option for paint-on caption display.
What am I missing?

Yes, I’ve read this too. But FCPX gives Japanese as an option in their list of languages. Any ideas on how to make it work?

What's the final usage of your video?
It will be viewed virtually via screen share to multinational participants as part of internal training.
How do the participants choose the caption language in a screen share?
It needs to be embedded into the video. Japanese only for this one.
