Can I rename an Airport Time Capsule that is not being used as a Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule that I would like to relabel as an external drive. It will not be used as a Time Machine. Is it possible to rename it to fit into my external drive patterns? I see it in my Finder and can access it and use it - I just would like to rename it and can't find if that's possible.

Hard to know what might have gone wrong. I tried this a few minutes ago and the change was reflected immediately with no issues.

Power off both your Mac and the Time Capsule

Wait a minute

Power up the Time Capsule and let it run a minute

Then, power up the Mac

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac

Click on the picture of the Time Capsule

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Base Station tab at the top of the next window

Edit the Base Station Name as you wish

Click Update at the lower right to save the new changes

In the example below, you can see that the name of my Time Capsule is TC

The device password will remain the same unless you also change the password.

Bob, I did that process and it said it may take some time for changes. I must have done something wrong but now I can't see the drive. It shows the internet globe then at the bottom says "No configured Airport base stations have been found. Airport utility will continue searching." Is there a way to help it along or search otherwise. I have waited about 15 minutes and rebooted the Air Capsule. On the "other Wi-Fi Devices" tab it reads "No new Wi-Fi devices discovered. Any suggestions?

Bob, I did as you suggested and that worked. When I bring up "Get Info" on that Airport External under General it reads "Kind: Time Capsule." It also says "Where: Network". I just want this to be an external drive - not a Time Machine. Is there a way to change that and have it show as another drive? I'm not able to even tell how big the drive is.

If you can see the Time Capsule using the Finder and can access and use it, then you are also using it as an external network drive.

Although you won't be using the Time Capsule for Time Machine, you can see the current status of the Time Capsule hard drive by......

Opening System Preferences.......the gear icon on the dock

Open Time Machine

The status window will tell you how much space is available on the Time Capsule hard drive, which is named "Data" by default.

If you have existing backups on the Time Capsule that you no longer want to use, then you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive using AirPort Utility to completely wipe the drive.
