On numerous support pages I see "Character Viewer is still there in Mac OS. To access to it, open System Preferences > Keyboard, and tick "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar"
But in Big Sur I don't see that option in Keyboard preferences, nor do I see anything in the menu bar. What gives? All I want to do is type special characters.

In addition to the menu bar, you can use Edit > Emoji & Symbols or Control Command Space
