2009 iMac 24- Update

Husband is using my old Mac. Only for internet and Excel, etc. Several sites say that they do not support the browser. How do I change or update it? I can't figure it out.

OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan is the latest version you can run.

Thank you. I remember awhile ago I had tried to upgrade to whatever the next one was (Sierra?) and it wouldn't work. It's running on Yosemite. And I admittedly gave up... but rather than buy a new Mac for him, I'm searching for answers.

You're welcome. You still may need a different browser. See how El Capitan works and if you still have an issue post back.
