Mac unable to boot

I updated my iMac to Big Sur then decided to erase the hard drive to try and speed it up. Since doing so I am unable to use the computer. When switched on I am greeted with a flashing folder. Cmd + R leads to the internet recovery tool which gives the option to reinstall OS. However when prompted to select the disk, my hard drive is missing! Please could someone help?
