Clearing Notifications with Apple Pencil Opens Notes App

Every time I try to “clear all” notifications with my 2nd Generation Apple Pencil, the iPad opens the Notes app. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Model: iPad Pro 11-inch Wi-Fi

Latest Software: iPadOS 14.4

Thanks

I presume you are attempting to clear notifications from the Lock Screen using your Pencil? If so, you are triggering the Access Notes from Lock Screen feature.

If my supposition is correct, you can disable this function from Settings:

Settings > Notes > Access Notes from Lock Screen - set to OFF

Okay, thanks for your additional clarification - although this appears to have no connection with the issue outlined in your initial post.

I cannot replicate the inability to clear Notifications using the X and Clear buttons. When using the Apple Pencil with these buttons on the Notification screen (this being tested on two different iPad Pro devices), the Notifications are cleared as expected.

As such, the issue that you describe appears to be explicitly with your iPad. A forced-restart of your iPad may be helpful- as this will often resolve an isolated software issue:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

To be absolutely clear...

It is not possible to perform gestures with Apple Pencil that begin “off-screen”, such as:

  • swiping down from the top-right of the screen to expose the Control Centre
  • swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen to reveal the Dock
  • swiping up on the Notification screen dismiss the Notification Screen

Similarly, the screenshot gesture that you are triggering can only be performed with the Apple Pencil; this gesture cannot be replicated with a swipe of the finger.

As such, the behaviour that you describe is completely consistent with expected operation of iPadOS. This is not a fault.

There are no swiping nor gestures going on here, only clicking the Clear button with the Apple Pencil. I’m positive there is no screenshot gesture involved in this problem. It seems all but consistent with iPadOS behavior if the buttons right next to the Clear button work perfectly fine and aren’t triggering the Notes App like the Clear button is when clicked with the Apple Pencil.
