no voicemail notification

Hi all, new to iPhone, 12 mini.

My phone does not appear to indicate that I have waiting voicemails. I have checked all notification settings, and everything is active. I contacted my carrier and they say all is well on their end.

I am under the impression that if I have a waiting voicemail, there should be a dot or badge on the green phone app icon. This does not happen.

When a call goes to vm, I get a text from my provider that a vm is waiting. With the banner notifications set to ‘persistent’, it does show up in the Notification Centre, but if I accidentally clear that notification it is gone forever.

edit: if I toggle airplane mode, a Vm notification banner and sound will very briefly appear and disappear, never to be seen again. This suggests to me that the phone is getting notice of a vm from the carrier...

Am I missing something? On my old Android devices there would be an icon that was there as long as there were unheard voicemails, so I assume similar on iPhone?

note I do NOT have visual voicemail.

If you're still not able to see your voicemail notifications, this may help:

There are several ways to receive a notification for a call or voicemail. You can have an alert presented on the Lock Screen when your iPhone is not in use, or a Banner at the top of the page when it is. You can have them delivered to the Notification Center for later reference, it can also play a sound and display a badge. Whether you use one, all, or a combination of those notifications - when you clear the notification from one location it clears them everywhere. For example, if you see the banner and you interact with it, it will clear your notification. This means the red badge will disappear as well. If you open the Phone app and tap on the Voicemail tab without listening to your voicemails, the badge will also disappear.

That being said, you mentioned that you have Banners set to persistent on your iPhone. With it set to persistent, it forces you to interact with the notification - thus clearing the notification. You might try setting your Banners to Temporary. This should allow the notification to display for a few seconds on your screen, but it also goes away without interaction, and the red badge will stick around until you open the Phone app and tap on your Voicemail tab.

Warmest Regards.
