Visual Voicemail not working

After the update of iOS 16.1. I cannot get my visual voicemail to work nor get any notifications of new voicemail.

I googled how to troubleshoot this matter and tried everything. Restarting my phone, turning the airplane mode on and off, reinserting my SIM card, resetting my network, changing my voicemail password (would always say error try again later).

So I went ahead and reached out to my phone carrier, was assured that changing my password would work but had to wait 24 hours. 24 hours had passed and still nothing. Reached out again and talked to another representative, was told they were getting error on their end too and for me to wait another 72 hours to hear back from the customer service. A week later I did not hear anything back and again reached out. Was told that maybe my SIM card needed to be changed. So I drove to the nearest carrier store, got my SIM card changed and still no visual voicemail nor notifications. Was told to go to Best Buy and talk to the geek squad, they can help troubleshoot it. So of course I drove to Best Buy. Did some diagnostic and everything came back normal, nothing was found wrong with my phone.

Now I am reaching out to see if anyone is having the same issue or if anyone knows how to fix it?! I am getting frustrated, I already exhausted everything I can possibly do.

I tried everything over several days. Something finally worked - don't ask me what it has to do with it, but it worked instantly:

Settings-> General -> Date & Time ->Toggle On "Set Automatically". Go back to phone app and check voicemail. Good luck!

I hope this works for you, too!

Sadly I have came to a conclusion that I will just check my voicemail the old fashioned way once a week. All these promises saying I assure you that it would work again. They’re just assuring that the voicemail is working. Not the visual voicemail. Told them millions of time that my voicemail works but not the visual nor getting notifications if I’m getting voicemail or not. They just tell me you’ll have to turn on your notifications. 🤦🏻‍♀️ as if I don’t have it on.

I had this same issue for a long time on my iphone. I went back and forth with several representatives from my carrier (AT&T), who were never able to get me properly set up with visual voicemail, though they said I was set up for visual voicemail. All I would get is the audio voicemail, where I would have to call to listen to voicemails (and no notifications of new voicemails). Resetting network settings did not work either.

Finally, I requested to speak to a senior tech support advisor. He was able to see that I was not set up with the proper visual voicemail on their end. I was set up with android visual voicemail, even though I have an iphone and should have been set up with visual voicemail for iphone. I don't know how that happened or why several representatives never previously caught that.

He explained that there are different types of visual voicemail for different types of phones, and a lower level tech support advisor may not have seen or realized that it was set up for the wrong type. After he made the change to visual voicemail for iphone, I had to restart my phone and then go through the process of setting up my voicemail with a passcode again, and then it worked fine.

Anyone having a similar issue should try talking to a senior tech support advisor from your carrier, and ask that they check that you are set up with the correct visual voicemail for your type of phone.

Happy to report that my second call to AT&T resolved the issue. I did need to get to a second level advisor.

The steps that need to be taken:

1 - With the iPhone turned off, re-provision the iPhone on their end.

2 - Restart the iPhone and, with WiFi off, open the phone app via the cellular network.

3 - Go to voicemail and enter new passcode to set up voicemail. This showed old phone messages in Visual Voicemail but not new ones.

4 - Go to System Settings under General, Transfer or Reset iPhone and Reset the Network Settings. This seems to be the key step to get things working.

Thanks again. Hope these steps will help others.

This is a much bigger issue than the carriers are acknowledging. My story…my iPhone 7 (Verizon) visual voicemail stopped showing messages over a year ago (about the same time they introduced 5G in our area). My wife had same phone and same service plan with NO ISSUES. At Verizon store multiple times, on phone with “high-level” Verizon tech support multiple times over two months. Replaced SIM card, replaced phone (IPhone 12), added a signal booster unit to our home, reset network connection dozens of times, had Verizon reset my voicemail dozens of times……NOTHING works permanently. I ended up using a third-party voicemail app. I believe strongly that this issue is due to the network addition of 5G in some way …. the signal waves are different and shorter….and it is affecting thousands of us and the networks are not acknowledging it.

I've been on the phone with AT&T support for hours, doing the same thing over and over. She clearly didn't know what visual voicemail is, and kept telling me how to access voicemail the old way. This has happened once or twice over the years and someone at AT&T had a fix, but that was ages ago. I can't find anything online either. I've done all the normal stuff, too.

I got this fixed by:

  1. Calling Apple, at (800) 275-2273, to walk through troubleshooting steps including removing my VPN and doing a Network Reset. This removed visual voicemail from my phone completely, so I was told to call my carrier to take over.
  2. Called Verizon technical support, at (800) 837-4966, and they walked through resetting my voicemail. They said 99% of the time it worked, but in this case it didn’t. They routed me to advanced technical support.
  3. Talked to Verizon advanced tech support. They went through the process of “reprovisioning” my voicemail by telling me to turn my phone off, while they did it, and turn my phone on 15 minutes later. When I turned my phone back on, 15 minutes later, everything worked great and all visual voicemail reappeared that was previously hidden.

hope that helps.

Then you need to try to speak to someone else, as frustrating as that may be. You may also want to make another visit to your Apple Store and see if they might be willing to swap out your device:

I personally have AT&T and Visual Voicemail works perfectly with my 14 Pro Max as well as on the 14 Pros of several friends.

It's almost always an issue where your account needs to be reprovisioned to indicate there is an iPhone on the account and to enable Visual Voicemail.

It might also make sense for them to try setting your account up with a new eSIM.

We have the problem on a new iPhone 14 Pro. Spent two 2+ hour sessions with senior level tech support and engineers at AT&T. They determined that the service is working fine on their end and that it must be an issue with the iPhone or iOS software. Seems like the issue must be the iPhone as it works fine on my iPhone 11 which is in the same AT&T account.

Well, that's apparently not a workable solution.

This non-functional Visual Voicemail problem began for us in late 2019 while using an iPhone 10 on Verizon.

In 2020, we upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro and the frequency of the problem increased.

We tried just about everything, including time-consuming troubleshooting with Verizon and Apple tech support.

This usually fixed things temporarily:

  • Toggling Siri in Settings / Siri & Search

and / or

  • Turning off Wi-Fi and rebooting the iPhone

But, the problem would always eventually return.

Visual Voicemail has been a solid feature available on all iPhones since 2007!

From a technical standpoint, this really should not be complicated or difficult to fix.

It could be caused by a combination of things on the iPhone and confusion in the carriers VM system.

Anyhow, important, time-sensitive voicemails that are crucial to our business were getting lost in space for days.

Last week, in desperation, we switched carriers to T-Mobile and began using a brand new iPhone 15 Pro.

With a different carrier and new phone, I was certain that this would fix it.

Unfortunately, THE PROBLEM REMAINS!

I find it interesting that resetting Siri temporarily fixes the issue.

I wonder if a particular App or unknown setting is causing this bug?

Not all, but many of the voicemails we don't receive are placed from a landline.

Could noise or poor audio quality caused by calling from an old phone cause this problem?
