Mute conversations

After update i am constantly muting conversations by accident. How can i disable the slide feature that allows me to mute?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 10

I have a problem that the conversation I have with this contact is ongoing and goes back several months. I cannot get to the “top” of the conversation easily and do not wish to delete the conversation as I refer back once in a while. But I am startled to find out it was muted as I want to immediately know when he has texted. Is there a different way to toggle this feature off and on?
