Updating WhatsApp

When I try to update WhatsApp I get the message "This app cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID". This site indicates that I would need to uninstall the App and reload it with the correct Apple id. I have no idea why it thinks that my id has change. I am very concerned that I will lose access to my messages even if I archive them due to the change in the installation.
