As it turns out, the two Thunderbolt inputs on the right side of my refurbished 2018 MBP that I bought from Apple quit working. It wasn’t until it dawned on me to plug the external SuperDrive into the two ports on the left side of the computer that I got the SuperDrive to work! My MacBook Pro is being serviced right now by a local Apple certified repair shop. They reconnected the two Thunderbolt ports and also noticed that the battery was swelling! Thanks to Apple Care everything‘s been taken care of! Thank you for reaching out!

Hi bongoslap,
We understand that you're wanting to use an external drive with your Mac! We'd be happy to provide some guidance on how to get it working for you. Let's start here: Use external storage devices with Mac.
If your SuperDrive came pre-formatted, you may have to reformat the drive to APFS (Apple File System) for compatibility, which requires you to erase your SuperDrive. If you have any data on it, we suggest saving it to another location or making copies. This article shows you how to Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac. Here's more information on the File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac.
We hope that helps.
Cheers!
