I can’t get my iPad 4th gen to shut off
What am I doing wrong that I am unable to shut off my generation 4 iPad?

I believe the iPad 4th gen has a home button, so the solution in parentheses applies.
The 4th generation iPad Air does not have a Home button.
Simultaneously tap and hold the fingerprint button and either the volume up or down button, until you see the familiar “Slide to turn off” indicator.

We don't know what you're doing wrong, as you have not told us what you're doing at all!!
Press the power button for several seconds, then choose "Slide to power off".
Need to press power button and volume button at same time..

Agreed. But the 4th generation iPad (not Air) does.
