erasing a damaged iPhone

How can I erase an iPhone that I cannot open and get to the settings since it is damaged? I have a replacement phone already set up but I need to mail the damaged one back. I've taken the SIM card out but I have no way of getting to the settings on the phone to erase it.

Hello bondse,

Depending upon the extent of the damage it may be possible to send a command through iCloud.
