Will an Apple TV work on any tv?

I want to buy a new (4th gen??) Apple TV device but need some questions answered first so i hope someone can answer them for me.

  1. Will it work on any tv? (I have a 10 y.o. Samsung plasma which my 3rd gen TV works fine on.)
  2. Is it worth getting the 4k version? I mainly watch youtube and Netflix and I don't have 4k cable service if that means anything.
  3. What is the point of the memory (32gb, 64gb)? Is this used for buffering? What is the advantage/disadvantage to each?

Thank you in advance.

  1. The Apple TV box will work with any TV that has an HDMI input. If your 3rd generation worked fine, then so will a newer model.
  2. In 2021, I would say go for the 4K model to be ready for the coming years, particularly if you have of 4K TV or consider getting one while you still have the your upcoming Apple TV box. Apple TV offers a lot of 4K content that does not depend on cable service (iTunes Store, Apple TV+, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, etc.).
  3. 32 GB/64 GB is about disk space. Your 3rd generation model had 8 GB. It is used for the system software, for apps from the on-device App Store, for storing settings/preferences, for caching snippets of content (buffering) [more so for 4K], and for screen saver clips [more so for 4K]. Some users may never encounter the limits of a 32 GB model, other users may be glad that they have storage capacity to try out many apps. Particularly games can be large in size. Would you be annoyed to have to delete a few lesser used apps if needed? Would you be annoyed to be limited for amount of screen saver clips by the 32/64 choice?

  1. If the TV has HDMI inputs then yes it will work on any TV. If you intend to buy a 4K TV at some point I would recommend buying the 4K model over the HD model. In order to view 4K content you have to first have a 4K Apple TV, next have a 4K (or greater) TV, and finally subscribe to 4K content. Netflix offers a LOT of 4K content in their subscription plan. Your old Netflix plan likely does not include 4K. Most users that buy 4K Apple TVs get the 32GB model. The only difference between the 32 and 64 GB models is the storage used for apps and games. By the way if you are in the USA Amazon is selling the 32GB model today for $30 off or $149.00
