iMessage activation unsuccessful?

I bought a new 12 pro max yesterday and it says my iMessage activation was unsuccessful. If I send a message it is being sent from my iCloud email and not my phone number. I went to my carrier and they can’t fix the problem. How do I get my iMessage to activate?
