Back up using time machine
Will it erase all my existing files when I back up my mac using Time Machine? Or I need to have a new external hard disk for it? Can I still keep my files if I ask not to encrypt? Thank you.

The TM backup will eventually fill the available space.
You can partition the drive (using Disk Utility), use one partition for TM and the other to store files. However, if those files are not backed up anywhere, that’s a risk if the drive fails. A good minimum rule is 3-2-1, three copies of all data (one is your internal drive), two backups with one of those offsite.
Time Machine should always have its own dedicated
drive. There is always a possibility for corrupting the
backup if the drive is shared with other data which
defeats the purpose of a backup.
Hi,
You'd better get new external drive for Time Machine backup.
