Can I change my Apple ID to alias email address?

My Apple ID is a@gmail.com. I have an iCloud primary email address primary@icloud.com. It has an alias, alias@icloud.com. Now I want to put this alias as Apple ID and I am OK with losing or converting the primary iCloud email to alias. I am getting this error when I try to change

How do I change my primary apple ID alias? I have changed my Apple ID email address, but my primary alias still uses my old email prefix. You can't use an alias for you Apple ID email address.
