The Guardian and the Apple News app

I live in the UK. I opened Apple News a few times recently, and it says The Guardian newspaper “is not available in your region” on my iPad. Is that because I don’t have a subscription to the paper, or is something else going on? The Guardian app works fine, the iPad itself has UK mobile phone SIM, and I’m actually in the UK.

I reinstalled the app, and it seems to know I’m in the UK. I have subscriptions to US papers, and lived in China (before getting this device).

It doesn’t seem to work on my iPhone either.

If it’s just I need a subscription, why doesn’t it just say, and how would I tell it anyway?
