With the recent iOS 14,  implemented more privacy perimeters. That dot is normal. You will see another dot when doing FaceTime or video chat. That color would be green.

You cannot make a telephone call without using a microphone. Not using speaker phone does not mean you not using a microphone. How else would anyone hear your voice on the call if the phone was not using the microphone?

Every telephone and voice radio in the history of voice communication uses a microphone when you’re talking to someone on the device. So yes, the dot will be there every single time you make or receive a telephone call on your iPhone.

The app accessing the microphone is the iOS Phone app itself.

If it’s normal then what’s the point of having it? It is only supposed to display an orange dot when an app is accessing your microphone. I have all my apps blocked from using my microphone and I am not using my speakerphone yet it shows up every time I make a call. Therefore my mic is being accessed by “someone” every time I make a call but who and why. They certainly don’t have my permission to do so. The whole point of the orange and green dots are to let you know when your phone is being accessed for privacy purposes. It is not normal for it to be there every single time I make a call so why is it happening now?

It’s the weekend, I woke up and saw two emails notifying me of communication on this thread. When ever you’re using any phone, house phone included, there is a microphone. That’s how your voice is transmitted.

I do believe you’d block all the other apps from using the mic, but you can’t block the installed phone app from utilizing the mic. That’s just impossible. With iOS 14,  focused of user privacy, hence the indicators.

for your last question, you’re already answered it yourself with sentence before that question.
