What back up drive for my 2017 iMac?

Indeed to buy a new back up drive for my 2017 iMac with 1Tb HD.

My current back up drive is a 1Tb G Drive that is starting to make grinding noises. I use Time machine and the back up drive has never gone over 0.6Tb and the iMac Hd is less than 0.3Tb.

What size and type of back up drive should I buy, please?

iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 10.15

Most experienced users on these forums prefer the OWC Mercury Elite Pro due to it's high quality, high reliability, reasonable pricing and service from the vendor. I have some that are 15 years old and work just fine. When the drive dies (note I said drive and not the enclosure) it takes 5 minutes to replace it and only requires a screwdriver to do it.

If you live outside the USA, please use OWC International Resellers to find a reseller in your general area.

Backup drives do not need the expense of buying an SSD. For backup, using an external HD is all that is necessary. You could use an SSD however save the money and just buy a EHD. If you were using the backup as a bootable clone then I would say a SSD would be a good idea. If you are only using Time Machine or another backup app, just use a EHD.
