McBook Air does not connect KOBO reader (with adaptor)

I have a McBook Air with thunderbolt 3 and use an adaptor to connect USB - A devices. It works with every device except my new Kobo Libra. Any suggestions?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Well, that was the first thing I did. But they could not nail it down.
