You pushed the power button on the keyboard to power it back on after replacing the batteries, right?

Yes. But I will try newer batteries just in case

In system preferences I’m in keyboard- it’s circling like it’s trying to find a device but just keeps circling.
And when you pushed the button, did the little green light on the keyboard come on?
If not, maybe you have the batteries in backwards, or the batteries you installed are no good.
Yes it comes on but doesn’t stay on -never has.
