Pairing another apple watch

I am trying to pair another apple watch with cellular and have unpaired the other apple watch already. My iPhone recognized the watch I now want to pair but my iPhone (in the iWatch app) shows that it is checking for updates while a small window is open saying 'Unable to Check for Update - Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet' with the options of 'Start Over' and 'Try Again' - there is no option to move past this point. I have tried several times to get past this pint to no avail. What am I doing wrong and what do I do??
