I am getting a message that the software on the watch needs to be updated, but it won't update because i'm not connected to the internet...but i am connected! help

Trouble setting up apple watch.

getting message that there is an update available, but when i try to process through the update, i get a failure message because "I'm not connected to the internet" but I definitely AM connected.
