Text message option to silence a thread - doing the opposite

I have an iPhone 12, an iPad and a MacBook Air which are all up-to-date as of March 2021. Since last week’s latest Big Sur update, something went haywire. I have been choosing the Do Not Disturb option for some individual and group text threads, but it does not silence them anymore, it does just the opposite. This is happening to every text thread that I have. When I swipe left , I see the little bell has a line through it as if Do Not Disturb was on, but the moon icon is not next to the text name and it chimes with each text that comes in. Removing Do Not Disturb on an individual thread, takes it OFF of silencing and now the moon icon appears. What?? Why is the opposite happening? Is Apple aware of this? Are they planning a fix for it? I obviously don’t want to use DoNot Disturb on my entire device- only on select text messages, especially those annoying group texts that chime all day long. There are a number of text threads that need to be silenced. And, now I’m unable to do this. It always worked before. Does anyone know what happened or is anyone else, as of early March 2021 having this problem as well? ?

Thanks for getting back to us, SageandSpirit!

Based on what you've shared with us, we can confirm that this is expected behavior in the most recent versions of iOS, iPad OS, and macOS.

Swiping from right to left will display the bell icon with a line through it. If you'd like to mute the thread, tapping the bell icon with remove the line (for next time you access it) and display a moon icon to the left of the thread.

Next time you swipe over the thread from right to left, you'll see a bell with no line, meaning that you have the option to enable notifications for that thread.

In summary, the icon shown is representative of the action you'd like to take next, and not necessarily the current setting.

All the best.

Hi, SageandSpirit!

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities!

We understand you aren't able to silence any text message thread. Just to make sure we are on the same page, is this happening across all of your devices, or a particular one? Which exact versions of iOS, iPad OS, and macOS are currently installed?

Have you been able to perform any of the basic troubleshooting steps? What were the results?

This is happening across all of my devices. If I want to hear the chime of a text coming in then I need to make sure that the little bell icon has a line through it. If I want to silence a text message then I need to make sure the bell does not have a line through it. Obviously it’s the opposite all around.

I have rebooted everything and unfortunately, the problem remains.
