Why does my Time Machine backup disk only give me the option to Remove Disk and won't start backup?

I have an old iMAC and i'm trying to back up to Time Machine. The available disk is "untitled" but it is not full. Last used in 2017 for backup. Why can't I start backup? It only gives me the option to remove Disk

iMac, OS X 10.11

Just use Disk Utility to erase the disk and then start a new backup set. Much easier than trying to figure out why TM won't backup to it now.
