Three Thoughts:

  • Hold Down Control Key:

See what happens when you hold down the control key, and then click on the icon. Do the you the default right-click menu?

  • Create a New Administrator:

Try creating a different administrator, seeing if it then works. If it does, then is it something misconfigured in your current user.

  • Boot into Safe Mode:

Hold Down the Shift Key upon boot. Once at the login screen, release shift. See if it all now works. In Safe Mode, only necessary items load, preferences are set aside, and corrupted settings (i.e. caches) are fixed. Wait 30 seconds, and then reboot, login in as normal. See if they now open.

"Your 3 suggestions did not solve the double click problem - seems to that calendar notification are now working. Reminder notification are not working though, just discovered that double clicking a word does not highlight it or allow any changes. . Any more ideas? Stowell"

Two More Thoughts:

A. Restore from a Backup:

Have you recently created a backup of your Mac prior to all of this? if so, restore from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, prior making any major change to your device, such as an application installation.  Point Being: Always have a recent backup.

Or:

B. Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Perhaps, the install did not go through as intended. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support. Important: Be certain to backup your Mac, prior to this reinstallation.
