Does the watch measure swimming workouts if you aren’t using your arms, like when using a kickboard?

My Series 7 watch consistently undercounts laps and distance while I swim. Does walking outdoors for 20 minutes to recalibrate the Apple Watch Series 7 have any bearing on swim laps? It's what Apple Support recommended. My understanding is that the watch uses the accelerometer, the gyroscope, and the distance you put in for the pool length (which is correctly set to 25 yds) to calculate laps and distance. Over the course of 71 lengths, just over a mile, my watch counts 67 laps and 1670 yds. I understand walking outdoors can help the accelerometer calculate stride length, but does that have any bearing on arm movement? I'm swimming only freestyle.

Apple Watch Ultra Pool swim Workout Distance Alert Hi, I would like to enable a distance alert while doing a pool swim. In addition to having an overall distance goal, say 1000 yards, I'd like the watch to alert me when I reach 200 yards. I see there is an option to add a time alert, but no option to add a distance alert while having the goal being distance, time, or calories. Is this an option in the Apple workout app on the Apple Watch? Thank You, Brook

No because it uses your arm movements and the accelerometer to measure your distance.
