Constant Infrared flashing

I’ve seen this question come and go a few times- but recently noticed while reviewing security footage that all recent iPhones do emit bright IR flashes, roughly every 10-15 seconds, directly at the users face. I’ve started to pay more attention to this and tried disabling face-ID, which does not stop it. Why are all iPhones flashing bright (but invisible to most humans) infrared light at us thousands of times every day. Is it required for Face ID (but impossible to disable)?

Bottom line, whether you realize it or not (or want to admit it), this IS happening to you too- right now. All day, every day. What exactly is the purpose and why can I not disable it, if I so desire?

Odd how?

So what you are telling me is: there’s no possibility that anyone on the planet has already been through this with Apple and may be able to share that information here? or nobody here with possible inside knowledge? Is that correct?

It seems pretty far fetched (to me) for anyone to say something like that so definitively. Perhaps I am misunderstanding.

To be fair....Apple would be the only ones with fact based info about their products since they make them. That was an odd thing to say. People can assume the reasons or purposes but unless there is open info on Apples uses and intents it’s all speculation and not at all useful except for forming assumptions. They could be correct or they could be completely wrong. At any rate...good luck looking for whatever you’re truly hoping to learn. If it concerns you and you worry about the safety implications then it may be worth considering using something else that doesn’t admit the as much infrared flashing (assuming it’s unique to the iPhone). If it’s just a curiosity thing maybe do your own research outside of Apples forum where it’s less likely to get closed due to violation of rules. Good luck

So far, I am being told there is no useful information to be gleaned about my concerns here. I believe someone here likely has more information about this situation than I currently do. I could be mistaken.

If I am doing something wrong by asking these questions, then go ahead, shut me down.

Otherwise, please keep it coming. Any actual pertinent information related to the continuous infrared flashing is very much appreciated.

Well, polling in this forum is against the Terms of Use, so you honestly can't ask how many are aware their phone emits IR, which should be pretty well known.

The question here really is, can the IR sensor be turned off on iPhone. The answer is no. Other than that, as I mentioned in my first response, why questions can't be answered here, since no one here works for Apple, nor had anything to do with the design or components in iPhone.

Again, if you are concerned about it, take your concern directly to Apple is the best anyone here can offer you.

Any answers you would receive here would be guesses and not necessarily useful as no one on here would be able to tell you the exact reason Apple uses it. Just assumptions and speculation. Can’t really tell you if you or anyone should be too concerned but I would imagine, at least as far as the US is concerned if this was truly dangerous it wouldn’t have passed regulations.

Thank you for the feedback.

I mainly wish to gauge how many people are aware of this and if anyone has any useful knowledge about the why or how of the situation. I do not expect anything useful from Apple directly.

I do appreciate the response- if nobody else here is worried (other than I), I guess I’ll know where I stand at least.

Yes, I'm well aware the IR sensor on my iPhone cannot be turned off. And no, I'm not in the least concerned about it. The light emitted, which cameras can see, but the human eye rarely can, is not dangerous to our eyes, so personally, I'm not bothered about it.

Since Apple isn't here, asking why questions can't be answered, since none of us work for Apple. If you are concerned about this however, since this is a user to user only forum and Apple isn't here, nor are they reading these posts, feel free to leave Apple feedback at this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
