how can I stop AMPLibraryAgent from using up all my data

I can't be the only Apple customer living in the sticks with data caps so I hope there is an answer to this problem.

Trying to update my iPhone with the 14.4.1 update via Finder, MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7.

AMPLibrartyAgent just keeps going, downloading who knows what in the background but it's not the simple software update that's for sure.

I quit after 4 gigs were wasted but the update is less than 900 MB. I am not using iCloud for any media back ups or for my phone back ups.

When I tried using another phone as the internet source for this update, to bypass the MacBook Pro altogether, that didn't work either.

Any answers no matter how complicated are most welcome!

Hi there kaattie,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are trying to update your iPhone using the Mac, but you are concerned about the data usage of the download. Software update downloads may be larger than the size of the actual software as diagnostics are completed during an update as well. Updates should be completed while connected to Wi-Fi. Hotspot connections cannot be used to complete updates. Learn more here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

We hope this helps!

Unless you don't want to synchronize, update, nor backup your iOS or iPadOS devices with your computer, then AMPLibraryAgent is required. It was first introduced with macOS Catalina and continues on with Big Sur. It is basically a new device manager introduced by Apple for managing iOS/iPadOS devices. This in not limited to iCloud intercommunications, although, hitting a data cap would indicate that some Internet activity is going on ... and this would be typical for updates.

Yes, I discovered the 14.4.1 update is actually almost 6 GB, or at least the .ipsw file is that large. And, after trying again using hotspot as my internet source, it froze up the iPhone 12 so I'm back to square one.

Odd, too, that I was able to update my iPhone X from iOS 12 to 14 using another iPhone as the hotspot. All I have for internet is my 4 iPhones! Nothing else.

I guess I'm going back to the .ipsw route but thanks anyway.

When will Apple realize: Apple has customers in rural areas with zero access to high speed internet, and if we do have it, there isn't enough data to work and waste all these gigs on updates!
